Can You Replace a Single Damaged Siding Board?

Patch-up jobs can be a quick fix to many types of damage to your home. For example, you can call your local residential roofing service to replace individual shingles damaged by bad weather or a fallen tree branch. Removing broken shingles and putting in new ones are perhaps the most common jobs contractors often get called for. This way, you don’t necessarily have to replace the whole roof every time a shingle or two gets damaged.

For siding, however, things aren’t nearly as simple. You’ll find that contractors will recommend sectional replacements for siding rarely. It’s not a question of whether it’s doable but whether or not it would do more harm than good. Let our experts at Polk Contracting Inc explain why.

Can You Replace a Single Siding Board?

For storm-damaged siding, you’ll want to contact your insurance restoration contractor right away. However, they may suggest that you replace all your siding even if the damage is only on one or two panels. The reason is in how the individual boards are often installed. Siding boards are often placed overlapping adjacent boards so there’s no way to remove a middle panel without affecting the rest of the siding. Doing so may damage the other boards, in which case, you’ll have to replace everything anyway.

What Could Happen During Sectional Replacements?

Aside from the potential damage to neighboring boards, matching the colors of the new ones with the rest of your home can also pose a problem. Even if you use the exact same products, the older panels will have some very slight discoloration from wear and tear that would make the new board standout.

Should You Do It?

If you still want your siding and roofing contractor to replace only one section or area of your siding and you understand the risks, then you can do so. One more factor you should consider is that if your siding is old and nearing the end of its life span anyway, you might as well plan for a complete replacement.
